A fireman is facing prosecution for flying a skull and crossbones outside his home for his daughter’s pirate-themed birthday party.
41-year-old David Waterman was ordered to take it down after complaints from a neighbor because it reportedly breaches regulations controlling advertising.
But the 41-year-old father of four says he is determined to keep it up and is paying almost $200 to apply for advertising consent for the $10 flag at his home.

Triad Stage in Greensboro, NC, announced casting and production details for the world premiere of its homegrown musical, Bloody Blackbeard, about the legendary 18th-century pirate Edward Teach — one of North Carolina’s infamous adopted sons.
The resident Equity theatre has two North Carolina Appalachian mountain-set musicals behind it (Brother Wolf and Beautiful Star), and now it looks east to the state’s Atlantic coast.
Writer-director Preston Lane and composer-lyricist Laurelyn Dossett again collaborate for the project, a “daring adventure with original music,” scheduled for June 8-July 6. Opening night is June 12.
Mark David Watson will play the title role.
According to Triad, “From England to the Caribbean to the Carolina Coast, Teach forged a blazing career as the most dreaded pirate of all time. As Blackbeard, he was a dashing blend of terror and gallantry. To his victims, he presented an image of the devil incarnate; but he was putty in the hands of a beautiful woman. His high seas exploits, port city romances and deep buried treasure are the stuff of legend.”

BATH, N.C. — In a pirate-worthy broadside on conventional history, a Raleigh author claims that Blackbeard and many of his henchmen weren’t rogue Englishmen, but sons of North Carolina landowners.
Most historical accounts contend that the notorious pirate known as Edward Teach or Thatch was from Bristol, England. But Kevin P. Duffus said his review of archives and genealogical research indicates that Blackbeard was probably Edward Beard, son of a landowner in Bath in Beaufort County.
“There’s never going to be a smoking gun to determine who he really was,” Duffus said of the pirate. “My version is a lot more plausible than what’s been foisted upon us for nearly three centuries.”

Pirates and especially their flags are particularly unwelcome in Ashtead it seems.
Despite it being someway from the nearest dock or treasure island, battle lines are being drawn in Purcell Close.
David Waterman had been happily flying the pirate flag outside his home since March when he received a letter on April 21 from Mole Valley District Council telling him he needed permission for the flag.
The letter, from the council’s senior planning enforcement officer, warned the 41-year-old firefighter that he would need to apply for consent for the skull and crossbones - but it was unlikely, even if he applied - that it would be granted.
It added that if the flag was not removed within seven days he was likely to face prosecution.
